Choosing a thermal camera and lens

Which thermal camera is right for my application?

The right camera depends on what you need to inspect, the size of the target, your normal working distance, the temperatures involved and the level of detail or measurement accuracy required.

Tell Corey Technical about your application and we can help you compare suitable cameras, detector resolutions, focusing systems and lens configurations before you invest.

What information should I provide when asking for camera advice?

The most useful information includes:

  • what you need to inspect;
  • the approximate size of the target;
  • your normal and maximum working distance;
  • the temperatures you expect to measure;
  • whether the equipment will be used indoors or outdoors;
  • whether you need reports, video, remote monitoring or specialist software; and
  • any camera or specification you are already considering.

Photographs of the intended target or inspection environment can also help us understand your requirements.

How do I choose the correct detector resolution?

Detector resolution determines how many infrared measurement pixels are available to form the thermal image. A higher native resolution can reveal smaller details, provide more measurement points and allow useful images to be captured from greater distances.

However, the best choice also depends on the lens, target size, working distance and application. Resolution should therefore be considered as part of the complete camera and lens configuration rather than in isolation.

What does “native IR resolution” mean?

Native IR resolution is the physical resolution of the camera’s infrared detector. For example, a detector with a native resolution of 640 × 480 contains 307,200 infrared measurement pixels.

Some cameras use image-enhancement or processing technology to produce a higher-resolution displayed or saved image. These features can improve image appearance, but they are not the same as increasing the physical resolution of the detector. Corey Technical identifies native detector resolution clearly when comparing cameras.

How do I choose the right thermal camera lens?

Lens choice determines the field of view, the size of target that can be measured and the distance from which sufficient detail can be captured.

A standard lens is suitable for many general inspections. A telephoto or narrow-field lens can provide greater detail on smaller or more distant targets, while a wide-angle lens is useful when working close to large targets or in restricted spaces. Macro lenses are intended for very small targets and close-up inspection.

Use our Camera & Lens Advice form if you are unsure which lens will provide the required coverage and measurement detail.

Can one lens cover every application?

Not always. A general-purpose lens may suit everyday electrical, mechanical, HVAC and building inspections, but specialist applications can require a different field of view or focusing distance.

If you regularly inspect both large nearby targets and small distant components, an interchangeable-lens camera may provide more flexibility than relying on a single fixed lens.

Can Corey Technical compare cameras from different manufacturers?

Yes. As our product range expands, Corey Technical can help compare suitable professional cameras from different manufacturers based on your application and technical requirements.

Our aim is to identify the most appropriate equipment rather than automatically recommend a model based on the manufacturer.

Do I need a camera with interchangeable lenses?

Interchangeable lenses are particularly useful when target sizes and working distances vary, or when you need specialist wide-angle, telephoto, high-temperature or macro capability.

A fixed-lens camera may still be suitable where inspections are consistent and the standard field of view provides sufficient detail. We can help establish whether additional optical flexibility will provide a meaningful advantage for your work.

Can I purchase additional lenses or replacement accessories?

Additional lenses and replacement accessories may be available on request.

Some lenses must be installed and calibrated with the camera by the manufacturer. If you already own the camera, it may need to be returned for this work.

Contact Corey Technical with your camera model and requirements. We will confirm compatibility, calibration, pricing and availability before you proceed.

Returns and refunds

Can I return a camera if I change my mind?

If you are a consumer purchasing online, you will normally have the right to notify us of cancellation within 14 days of receiving the goods, subject to applicable exclusions.

Purchases made wholly or mainly for business purposes do not automatically receive the same statutory cooling-off rights. Business change-of-mind returns are subject to the applicable quotation, order terms and prior approval.

Visit our Returns & Refunds page for the complete information.

Returns & Refunds

Do I need to contact you before returning anything?

Yes. Contact Corey Technical before sending any camera, lens or accessory.

The correct return address and process may vary according to the product, manufacturer and reason for return. Unauthorised returns may be delayed or refused.

Who pays for return delivery?

For an approved change-of-mind return, the customer is normally responsible for the return cost unless Corey Technical agrees otherwise or applicable law requires a different arrangement.

Where an incorrect item has been supplied or equipment is confirmed to have arrived damaged or faulty, we will explain the appropriate collection or return arrangements.

What should I do if my order arrives damaged?

Photograph the external packaging before opening it, retain all packaging and supplied materials, and take clear photographs of any damage.

Contact Corey Technical promptly with your order number and the photographs. Do not dispose of the packaging or return the equipment until we provide instructions.

What should I do if I receive the wrong product?

Contact Corey Technical before using or returning the item. Provide your order number, details of what you expected to receive and photographs of the delivered product and packaging where possible.

We will check the delivery against your confirmed order and arrange the appropriate next step.

When will I receive my refund?

Approved refunds are made to the original payment method unless another arrangement is expressly agreed and permitted.

The processing period depends on the reason for the return and any applicable legal requirements. Your bank or payment provider may take additional time to make the funds available after Corey Technical has processed the refund.

Warranty, faults and after-sales support

What should I do if my camera develops a fault?

Contact Corey Technical before returning the equipment. Provide your order number, camera model, serial number and a clear description of the issue.

Photographs, video, error messages or sample thermal images may help us identify whether the problem can be resolved remotely or whether the equipment requires further assessment.

Warranty & Faults

What warranty is included with Guide Sensmart cameras?

Guide Sensmart professional thermal imaging equipment supplied by Corey Technical currently includes:

  • 3 years’ warranty for the camera;
  • 10 years’ warranty for the infrared detector; and
  • 2 years’ warranty for supplied accessories.

Cover remains subject to the manufacturer’s applicable warranty terms, assessment requirements and exclusions.

Does Corey Technical handle warranty enquiries?

Yes. Contact Corey Technical first and we will help gather the relevant information, complete initial troubleshooting and coordinate the appropriate support route.

Depending on the issue, assessment or repair may be completed by Corey Technical, a service provider, the supplier or the manufacturer.

Will a faulty camera always be replaced?

Not automatically. The appropriate resolution depends on the nature of the fault, the applicable warranty, the assessment findings and available parts or equipment.

A resolution may involve troubleshooting, firmware or software support, repair, component replacement, product replacement or another remedy provided by the manufacturer or required by applicable law.

Is accidental damage covered by the warranty?

Accidental damage is not normally covered by a manufacturer warranty.

If equipment has been dropped, struck, exposed to liquid or otherwise damaged, tell us when reporting the issue. We may still be able to help arrange an assessment or chargeable repair, subject to service and component availability.

Should I back up my files before returning a camera?

Yes. Back up thermal images, visible-light images, reports, templates, settings and any other information you wish to keep.

Diagnosis or repair may require the equipment to be reset, updated, reformatted or replaced, so stored data and personalised settings cannot be guaranteed.

Is calibration included in the warranty?

Not normally. Warranty assessment concerns faults or defects, while calibration verifies measurement performance against an appropriate reference.

Calibration requirements depend on the instrument, application, customer procedures and any relevant quality standards. Contact Corey Technical if you need help identifying an appropriate calibration or service route.

Specifications and measurement

What is thermal sensitivity?

Thermal sensitivity, commonly expressed as NETD, indicates how effectively a camera can distinguish very small temperature differences. A lower NETD value generally means greater sensitivity and smoother thermal detail, particularly in scenes with subtle temperature variation.

The importance of thermal sensitivity depends on the application. It can be particularly valuable in building diagnostics, research and inspections where small thermal differences need to be identified.

What temperature range do I need?

The required temperature range should comfortably cover the lowest and highest temperatures you expect to measure.

A wider range is not automatically better for every application. Electrical, building and HVAC inspections may remain within comparatively moderate temperatures, while furnaces, kilns and other high-temperature processes can require specialist ranges or lenses.

Tell us the expected operating temperatures if you are unsure which configuration is suitable.

What is the difference between accuracy and thermal sensitivity?

Accuracy describes how closely the reported measurement corresponds to the true temperature within the camera’s stated conditions and tolerances.

Thermal sensitivity describes how effectively the camera distinguishes small temperature differences within a scene. A camera can have strong measurement accuracy and high thermal sensitivity, but the two specifications measure different aspects of performance.

Is the highest-specification camera always the right choice?

Not necessarily. A higher-specification camera may provide more resolution, sensitivity, optical flexibility and analysis capability, but those benefits should be relevant to the work being performed.

For professional buyers, the best investment is the configuration that reliably captures the required detail, supports the correct measurement range and fits the intended inspection process without unnecessary limitations.
