Is the PT870S right for your work?

The PT870S combines 1280 × 1024 native infrared resolution, ≤15mK thermal sensitivity and 50Hz imaging with Guide’s advanced PT II inspection platform. Its detector records four times as many native thermal measurement pixels as the PT650S, providing substantially greater detail when the target is small, distant or cannot be approached safely.

It is designed for power utilities, specialist thermographers, critical-asset maintenance teams and research professionals whose inspection results depend on retaining fine thermal detail. This includes demanding long-range inspections, extensive image cropping, large-format reporting and applications where a small anomaly could carry significant operational or financial consequences.

Its interchangeable lens system covers wide-angle, telephoto, macro, TwinView and high-temperature inspection. The standard configurations measure up to 800°C, while the optional high-temperature lens extends measurement to 2,500°C.

Well suited to:

  • High-voltage substations, transformer bushings, insulators and electrical connections
  • Overhead power lines and other small targets inspected from a safe stand-off distance
  • Power generation, transmission and distribution condition monitoring
  • Critical industrial electrical and mechanical assets where early fault detection is essential
  • Professional thermography requiring heavy cropping or highly detailed client reports
  • Scientific research, product development and advanced thermal analysis
  • Inspections where access restrictions prevent the operator from moving closer
  • Organisations that require the highest native resolution available in the PT II range

Consider the PT650S if:

  • 640 × 512 native resolution provides sufficient detail at your normal working distances
  • You only occasionally need to crop or enlarge inspection images substantially
  • Most targets are accessible using standard or medium-telephoto lenses
  • You want a high-resolution PT II platform without paying for capability your inspections will rarely use

Consider the PT450S if:

  • Most inspections involve accessible targets at close-to-moderate distances
  • Your work primarily involves routine electrical, mechanical, HVAC/R or building inspections
  • 480 × 360 native resolution is sufficient for your reporting requirements
  • Lower initial investment is more valuable than maximum long-distance or cropping performance

Choose the right lens configuration

Lens choice determines how much of the scene is visible and how many detector pixels are placed on the target at a given distance. Wider lenses show more of nearby scenes, while narrower lenses provide more spatial detail on smaller or more distant targets. No single configuration is best for every application.

Need multiple lenses or a replacement accessory? Contact us before ordering so compatibility and any calibration requirements can be confirmed.

Fixed field-of-view lenses

Choose between wider scene coverage and greater spatial detail on smaller or more distant targets. The figures below are specific to the PT870S.

Maximum thermal detail when distance and target size matter

The PT870S combines a 1280 × 1024 native infrared detector, ≤15mK thermal sensitivity and 50Hz imaging to capture fine thermal evidence across demanding utility, industrial and scientific inspections. It is built for work where the target is small or distant, moving closer is unsafe or impossible, and losing detail could mean overlooking a costly developing fault.

Resolve small, distant targets from a safe position

Its 1,310,720 native temperature-measurement points provide four times the detector resolution of the PT650S. Paired with the optional 7° telephoto lens and its 10,000:1 distance-to-spot ratio, the PT870S can place substantially more measurement pixels on connections, line hardware and other small targets at long working distances.

Separate subtle anomalies across complex assets

≤15mK thermal sensitivity helps distinguish small temperature differences between comparable phases, components and test areas. The high native resolution keeps individual features clearly defined within dense or complicated scenes, making abnormal patterns easier to isolate and investigate.

Preserve detailed evidence for analysis and reporting

Fully radiometric images retain temperature data for post-inspection analysis. ApexVision S1 super-resolution produces enhanced output up to 2560 × 2048, while dual 8MP and 16MP visible-light cameras record detailed supporting context for cropping, close review and professional reports.

Configure the system around each inspection

A 50Hz frame rate and five focus modes maintain a clear, responsive live view. Interchangeable 45°, 25°, 15° and 7° lenses, TwinView configurations, a 3× macro option and temperature measurement up to 2,500°C allow one platform to cover specialist targets, distances and operating environments.

Guide PT II PT870S FAQs

Clear answers to the most common questions about selecting, ordering and using the PT870S.

Is the PT870S the right thermal camera for my work?

The PT870S is designed for inspections where maximum thermal detail has genuine operational value: small or distant electrical connections, high-voltage assets, complex industrial equipment, scientific analysis and other critical targets that cannot easily be approached. Its 1280 × 1024 detector is particularly valuable when substantial cropping, long-distance inspection or large-format reporting is required.

For routine close-range electrical, HVAC or building inspections, the PT650S may provide sufficient detail at a lower cost.

Which lens configuration should I choose?

The standard 25° lens is the best all-purpose choice for most electrical, mechanical and industrial inspections.

Choose:

  • Wide-angle 45° for confined spaces, plant rooms, building surveys and large nearby equipment
  • Medium telephoto 15° for smaller targets at moderate distances
  • Telephoto 7° for distant utility, substation, solar or industrial targets
  • Macro for circuit boards and very small components at a fixed 100mm working distance
  • High-temperature 25° for targets between 400°C and 2,500°C
  • TwinView 25° + 45° for switching between standard and wide views
  • TwinView 25° + 15° for switching between general inspection and greater stand-off detail

If you provide the approximate target size, working distance and temperature range, Corey Technical can help identify the most suitable configuration before ordering.

Can I change or add lenses later?

Yes. The PT870S has an interchangeable lens system, so compatible lenses can be added as your inspection requirements develop. However, lens choice directly affects scene coverage, working distance and the amount of detector detail placed on the target. If you know the approximate target size, inspection distance and temperature range, contact us before ordering and we can help identify the most appropriate configuration.

What temperature range can the PT870S measure?

Standard PT870S configurations provide measurement ranges of −40°C to 150°C and 0°C to 800°C. The dedicated high-temperature 25° lens extends this capability to 400°C to 2,500°C for furnaces, kilns, foundries and other extreme-temperature applications.

How much detail can I expect from the PT870S?

The 1280 × 1024 detector records 1,310,720 native temperature-measurement points—four times the native resolution of the PT650S. Combined with ≤15mK thermal sensitivity, this allows the camera to resolve fine component boundaries and distinguish subtle temperature differences across complex scenes. ApexVision S1 super-resolution can also produce enhanced images up to 2560 × 2048 for closer review and reporting.

What types of faults can the PT870S help me find?

The PT870S can reveal thermal patterns associated with high-resistance electrical connections, phase imbalance, overloaded components, deteriorating bearings, motor faults, friction, insulation defects, heat loss, moisture-related anomalies, process irregularities and abnormal heating or cooling. The exact fault still requires interpretation by a competent inspector, but the PT870S provides the thermal detail needed to locate, compare and document potential problems.

Can I use the PT870S for professional inspection reports?

Yes. The PT870S captures fully radiometric JPEG images and radiometric video, preserving temperature data for post-inspection analysis. Guide ThermoTools software supports detailed review and reporting, while the dual 8MP and 16MP visible-light cameras provide high-resolution supporting context. This allows thermal findings, measurements and visible evidence to be presented together in professional inspection reports.

Does the PT870S require a computer or subscription?

No. The PT870S operates as a complete standalone thermal camera, allowing images and radiometric video to be captured, reviewed, analysed and stored directly on the device.

Guide ThermoTools for Windows supports more detailed analysis and report preparation, while the FocusIR app supports compatible mobile viewing, transfer and analysis workflows. Both Thermotools and FocusIR are free to use. No ongoing subscription is required to operate the camera.

Is the camera supplied calibrated and ready to use?

Yes. All Guide's thermal cameras and lens configurations available at Corey Technical are prepared by Guide Sensmart and supplied with a manufacturer calibration certificate.

The PT870S will arrive with a calibration certificate and inspection report, along with the batteries, charger, cables, SD card, carrying case and other standard accessories. It is supplied ready for professional thermal inspection.

If your contracts or quality procedures require a particular accredited or UKAS-traceable calibration service, contact Corey Technical before ordering so the requirement can be checked and quoted separately.

How long will delivery take, and will I receive an import bill?

Orders are dispatched directly from Guide Sensmart in China using DHL or UPS, with tracking and signature on delivery.

Available configurations normally arrive within 7–10 working days. Certain camera and lens combinations may require a 30–75 day lead time; the expected window will be confirmed for your selected configuration.

Corey Technical covers import VAT, customs clearance and related import costs. You will not receive an additional import bill on delivery.

What warranty protection is included?

The PT870S includes a 3-year manufacturer-backed camera warranty, a 10-year infrared-detector warranty and a 2-year warranty covering the selected lens and supplied accessories.

Corey Technical manages the warranty process with Guide Sensmart, including assessment, repair or replacement where applicable. Contact us before returning any equipment so the correct process can be arranged.

Can I return the PT870S if I change my mind?

Contact Corey Technical within 14 days of delivery if you wish to request a non-fault return. The camera must be unused, complete and in its original condition with all packaging and accessories. Returns must be authorised before anything is sent.

If a fault develops, contact us with the order number, serial number and details of the issue. Faults outside the return period are handled through the applicable warranty, without affecting any statutory rights that apply to the purchase.
